Loose incense is an invitation to slow down. Unlike sticks or cones that burn on autopilot, loose incense asks you to participate. To choose. To prepare. To be present. At 16th Era, our blends—like Persephone and Aphrodite—are crafted not just for scent, but for ritual, intention, and emotional alignment.
If you’re new to loose incense or curious how to work with these blends in a meaningful way, here’s how to begin.
What Is Loose Incense?
Loose incense is a blend of resins, herbs, roots, and botanicals designed to be burned on a charcoal disc. As it warms, it releases layers of aroma—earthy, resinous, floral, herbal—creating a sensory experience that unfolds slowly rather than all at once.
Because loose incense isn’t mass-produced or uniform, each burn feels slightly different. It responds to your intention, your moment, your Era.
What You’ll Need
To burn loose incense safely and intentionally, you’ll want:
- A heat-safe bowl or censer
- Charcoal discs (self-lighting)
- A lighter or matches
- A small spoon or fingers to place the incense
- Optional: sand or ash at the bottom of your bowl for insulation
Each of our loose incense blends come with a charcoal disc and a crystal to support your ritual.
How to Burn Loose Incense (Step-by-Step)
-
Prepare Your Space
Choose a quiet moment. Open a window if you’d like airflow. This is about presence, not perfection. -
Light the Charcoal
Hold the charcoal disc with tongs or place it in your bowl and light the edge. It will spark and crackle—this is normal. Let it turn grey and stop crackling (about 5–10 minutes). -
Set Your Intention
Before adding incense, pause. Ask yourself:
- What am I calling in?
- What am I releasing?
-
Who am I becoming in this Era?
-
Add the Incense
Sprinkle a small pinch onto the charcoal. Loose incense is potent—less is more. You can always add more as it burns. -
Observe & Receive
Let the smoke rise. Breathe deeply. Notice how the scent shifts. This is your moment to journal, meditate, pull cards, rest, or simply exist.
A Note on Crystals:
Each blend includes a crystal aligned with its energy. You may:
- Hold it while setting your intention
- Place it beside the censer
- Keep it on your altar or carry it afterward
Think of it as an anchor—something that continues working with you even after the smoke clears.
Make It Yours
There is no “right” way to practice ritual. You don’t need perfect words, an aesthetic altar, or hours of time. Your presence is enough.
Loose incense is about meeting yourself where you are—in this Era—and honoring the moment you’re in.
